We have been testing Microsoft Teams over the past couple of months as a replacement for Skype for Business that we currently use at Leap IT and thought we would share our thoughts with you.
Firstly, some of the facts about Microsoft Teams, if you already have a Microsoft Office 365 subscription then Teams is absolutely free however don’t worry if you are not yet using Microsoft Office 365 you can still get a very effective “free” version of Teams. In a nut shell Teams is Microsoft’s latest tool for team communications, think of WhatsApp, Skype, DropBox and Messenger rolled into one and you are half way there. Could this finally be a viable alternative to email? Maybe.
“Microsoft Teams is WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger and DropBox rolled into one…….and it’s also FREE”
A really cool feature is the ability to attach files directly into the message for your co-workers to see, with Skype you had to download the file however in Teams you can open the attachment and edit it directly in Teams. You can also have several people editing the file at the same time and see updates in real-time
Teams is also great for video conferencing either with colleagues or externally with customers and suppliers. You can also share your desktop during the call and collaborate together on documents in real-time.
“Schedule video calls and share your desktop with all participants”
Unlike Skype, which requires you to have a Skype account in order to join the party, with Microsoft Teams you can invite external users and suppliers into the “Team” by sending them a unique code. What’s more Teams doesn’t require any software to be installed on the user’s PC as it can run completely in a browser.
Desktop software is available to download onto your laptop or PC here and full mobile versions of Microsoft Teams is also available in the App Store for iPhones and Google Play for Android devices.
Video conference calls, Instant Messaging, file editing and sharing all work perfectly via the mobile app for iOS and Android. You can also add-in existing Sharepoint Teamsites into Microsoft Teams to access files and content stored in Sharepoint.
In short we absolutely love Microsoft Teams, it has all the best features of WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger and DropBox that everyone loves working with rolled into one. We have now rolled this out to everyone at Leap IT as our main collaboration tool throughout the business with great success.
In short Teams is a very powerful tool for any business that gets on-board with it and with over 150+ API’s it probably already connects with the applications you are currently using.
